Working with Natural Light
Natural light changes constantly. When you learn to read it quickly, your images gain depth and consistency.
Four variables to check first
- Direction: front, side, back, or top light.
- Quality: hard light with sharp shadows vs. soft light with smooth transitions.
- Intensity: total brightness and dynamic range in the scene.
- Color: warm sunrise/sunset tones vs. cooler open shade.
Reliable setups
For portraits, place subjects near window edges or in open shade. Rotate the subject in small increments and watch how shadow shape improves facial structure.
